Printing with R&F Pigment Sticks; On and Off the Press.

This workshop is open to artists with no printmaking experience to advanced printmakers, painters and artists. Class size is limited to 8.

We will build printing plates on Ampersand Gessobord panels, mat board and other found materials and use R&F encaustic medium to build luscious textures.  Next, we will “ink” the plates we make using R&F Pigment Sticks and transfer the image to paper by hand or with an etching press.

In this workshop, we will explore a variety of techniques and ideas including the following:

Monotype techniques using cardboard, mat board and other non-traditional substrates as printing plates

Encaustic collagraph: making textured printing plates from encaustic wax on panels and other substrates

Discuss tools, materials and techniques for creating varying textures on the plates

Off press; explore monotype techniques with gelatin plates

Inking and wiping techniques

Explore how differing printmaking papers affect the finished print

Tips and tricks for both displaying and using the finished prints as components of other artworks

And, possibilities for using the printing plates as artwork

Workshop $999 per person / 8 students maximum

Workshop Venue:

The workshop will be held at the roof top studio of host and artist/printmaker Hugo Anaya.

Alma del Sol is a bed and breakfast in the center of Guanajuato. Includes a fabulous breakfast each morning and lunch during the workshop, free WIFI, luxurious beds and great views of the city from the roof top studio.

Hotel de Color is a small apartment hotel also owned by Hugo and within a short walk to Alma del Sol.

You will be able to book your stay directly with Hugo Anaya for either Alma del Sol or Hotel de Color. First come first served for lodging.

My recommendation is to arrive at least one day prior to the workshop and leave a day or two afterwards. You want to make sure you are able to enjoy the city while you are there.

Upcoming workshops @ Glendale College in February & August each year – please see for more information.

R&F Handmade Paints Comprehensive Encaustic Workshops are designed to give participants thorough knowledge of the encaustic medium and method. We begin with a historical overview, introducing the classical method of encaustic painting, and then move into the 21st Century, demonstrating a wide variety of ways that encaustic can be used by contemporary artists today. Artists working in almost any medium will find these workshops are an exciting opportunity to expand their visual vocabulary with wax. Students are encouraged to bring an open mind and a willingness to experiment with a new material.
